UK Transitions to eVisa for Work and Study Visas: Vignettes Discontinued

In a major shift aimed at modernizing the visa process, the United Kingdom (UK) government has officially phased out visa vignettes (the physical visa stickers) for work and study visa applicants. Instead, the UK is now issuing eVisas — a secure, digital alternative that streamlines immigration procedures and aligns with global digital standards.

What Is an eVisa?

An eVisa is a digital record of a person’s immigration status, replacing the need for a physical vignette sticker in passports. It includes important details such as the type of visa, duration, and the holder's personal information. The switch is part of the UK Home Office’s broader goal to digitize immigration processes by 2025.

No more visa stickers in passports — everything is now digital.

Who Does This Affect?

From July 2024, all international students and skilled workers applying from outside the UK will receive an eVisa instead of a vignette. This affects visa applicants from all countries, including India, Nigeria, Ghana, Pakistan, and the Philippines, among others.

This means:

  • No need to collect a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) after arriving in the UK.
  • Visa status can be accessed and shared online.
  • Travel to the UK is now permitted using your passport and a digital eVisa confirmation.

Benefits of the eVisa System

  • 🌍 Global Access: Check your immigration status from anywhere in the world.
  • No more lost or damaged BRPs.
  • πŸ’‘ Faster border checks and simplified travel.
  • πŸ”’ Enhanced security through digital verification.

The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) will also provide applicants with a secure online account where they can:

  • View their visa status
  • Update passport details
  • Share immigration status with employers, landlords, and universities

What Should Applicants Do?

If you're applying for a UK study or work visa:

  1. Complete your visa application as usual on the official UK Government website.
  2. After approval, you'll receive an email with instructions to create a UKVI account.
  3. Your eVisa will be linked to your passport digitally — make sure to keep your passport details updated.

Tip: Always travel with the same passport you used in your application.

Transition Period for Existing BRP Holders

For those already in the UK with a valid BRP, the switch to eVisa is expected to take place by December 2024. The UKVI will notify you to register for an eVisa account ahead of this transition.

The move to eVisas is a significant step toward a fully digital UK immigration system. It's faster, safer, and more convenient for international students, skilled workers, and employers alike.

If you're planning to study, work, or migrate to the UK, now is the time to get familiar with the eVisa system. It’s the future of travel and immigration.
